VG = Volume Group

A Volume Group is a container with assigned settings that groups together and manages physical Volumes. A physical Volume can only belong to one Volume Group. In the creation of a Volume Group a certain physical patition size is set. The physical volume(s) are divided into physical partitions. A Volume Group also contains Logical Volumes which are built up of a number of logical partitions. Each logical partition is mapped to one or more phycal partitions (when assigned to more than 1 physical partition all partitions contain the same data). A Logical Volume does not have to be on one physical volume but will always be within one Volume Group. Different Volume Groups can have different settings.
